Reposted on behalf of Save Standard Time, Jay Pea:

From now into the end of November is the best time of year to ask state legislators to file new legislation for 2025 to ditch Daylight Saving Time and restore permanent Standard Time. We are asking legislators to do so, but requests from constituents like you are much more effective.

👉 EASIEST ACTION: Click this link to send a pre-written message to your state legislators (and share this link with friends): https://www.votervoice.net/ditchDST/Campaigns/118165/Respond

👉 OR CONTACT LEGISLATORS MORE PERSONALLY:

  • Find your state legislators’ contact information from your home address here: https://pluralpolicy.com/find-your-legislator/
  • Find our draft bill PDF for your state via the dropdown menu on our website here: https://savestandardtime.com/legislation/
  • Send that URL or PDF to your state legislators and ask them to file our legislation for 2025. Remind them that our effective date is contingent on other states taking the same action (to address “going it alone” concerns and to make it easier to pass). Make clear that permanent Standard Time is better than permanent DST. Tell them we will testify in support (and offer to testify yourself when the time comes, if you can).
  • Wait a week, then send them a reminder phone call or meeting request.

If you contact legislators personally, here is an example message you may edit and use:

Subject: File New State Legislation for Permanent Standard Time

Dear Senator/Representative/Assemblymember _____,

Please file new state-level legislation to ditch Daylight Saving Time (DST) and restore permanent Standard Time. This can be done easily, either by a resolution urging Congress to ditch DST nationwide, or by a bill exempting the state from DST in coordination with contiguous states. DST exemption is federally pre-approved by the Uniform Time Act, 15 USC Sec 260a(a)(1)-(2), and its effective date can be delayed until one or more other states will agree to do the same. Draft copies of such legislation can be found on the website for the nonprofit Save Standard Time: https://savestandardtime.com/legislation/

Permanent Standard Time is preferable over permanent DST in many ways:

— Permanent Standard Time is federally permitted (permanent DST is federally prohibited).

— The American Academy Sleep Medicine, National Sleep Foundation, Sleep Research Society, Society for Research on Biological Rhythms, and many more nonprofits endorse permanent Standard (while advising against permanent DST).

— Permanent Standard Time has a history of lasting for decades (permanent DST has repeatedly been repealed when tried, due to its harms to health and safety).

— Permanent Standard Time lets most people sleep longer year-round (permanent DST would force millions to start school or work in the dark for many months each year).

The Save Standard Time nonprofit and I would be glad to support you in filing a new state bill or resolution to ditch DST for permanent Standard Time. Thank you!

Several of our bills in 2024 passed first chambers, which was an historic first. We are closer than ever to passing a state’s bill through both chambers. Once that happens, many states will join and accelerate the momentum, and Congress will follow. But we can only achieve this goal with help from supporters like you.
