Polysomnographic Sleep Technologist – Overnight (Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation)

Job Description:

The Overnight Sleep Technologist provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients with sleep and wake disorders. This role is responsible for the acquisition, monitoring, analysis, and documentation of physiologic data during sleep and wakefulness to support accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. The technologist performs and manages sleep studies, initiates and titrates positive airway pressure therapies, and ensures patient safety and comfort throughout overnight testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct overnight diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies, including PSG, split-night studies, CPAP/BiPAP titrations, ASV, MSLT, and MWT as ordered.
  • Prepare patients for sleep studies by applying and calibrating electrodes, sensors, and monitoring equipment in accordance with AASM standards.
  • Continuously monitor physiologic signals (EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, etc.) and recognize abnormal events.
    Initiate, titrate, and troubleshoot positive airway pressure therapies, including CPAP, BiPAP, and adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV).
    Provide therapeutic and diagnostic use of supplemental oxygen and maintain non-invasive nasal and oral airway
  • Respond promptly to patient needs, alarms, and emergency situations during overnight monitoring.
  • Document study data accurately and completely in the electronic medical record and sleep software systems.
  • Maintain infection control, patient safety, and equipment cleaning standards.
    Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and team members to support continuity of care.
  • Participate in quality assurance, accreditation readiness, and ongoing competency training, as required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform overnight diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies, including polysomnography (PSG), split-night studies, CPAP/BiPAP titrations, adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV), MSLT, and MWT as ordered.
  • Prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures, addressing questions, and applying electrodes, sensors, and monitoring equipment in accordance with AASM standards.
  • Monitor, analyze, and record physiologic data during sleep and wakefulness, including EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, airflow, respiratory effort, and oxygen saturation.
  • Recognize, document, and respond to abnormal events, artifacts, and equipment issues in real time.
  • Initiate, titrate, and troubleshoot positive airway pressure therapies, including CPAP, bilevel modalities, and ASV, per physician orders and protocols.
  • Administer and monitor supplemental oxygen and maintain non-invasive nasal and oral airways.
  • Ensure patient safety, comfort, and dignity throughout overnight monitoring, responding promptly to alarms, patient needs, and emergent situations.
  • Accurately document study data, interventions, and observations in sleep software systems and the electronic medical record.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain sleep lab equipment and patient rooms in compliance with infection control and regulatory standards.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary team members to support continuity of care.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, accreditation readiness, and ongoing education and competency assessments.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, professional standards, and state and federal regulations.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Meets Medical Board of California requirements for Polysomnographic Technologist (PSGT) licensees.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support (Healthcare Provider).
  • PSGT – Polysomnographic Technologist, Medical Board of California.
  • RPSGT with Board of Polysomnographic Technologists.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding of sleep physiology, sleep disorders, and respiratory care principles.
  • Proficiency with sleep diagnostic equipment, PAP devices, and monitoring software.
  • Ability to work independently overnight while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Excellent patient-centered communication and customer service skill.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in urgent or emergent situations.

Physical & Work Requirements:

  • Ability to work overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist patients as required during overnight studies.
